Another perspective on beauty

What one person considers to be beautiful may be vastlydifferent from what another person may see as beautiful. It all depends on howwe, as human beings, look at one another. If we look only with our eyes, beautyis much more elusive than if we can also examine it with our hearts and oursouls.

There was a time when the curves of a woman were highlysought after, the emphasis has shifted in modern times – people tried to break  beauty down into a combination of specificphysical attributes. These may include a symmetrical body, a good complexion, youthfulness, health, and vitality. Unfortunately, it has been proven thatphysical beauty does not ensure a beautiful spirit, and this lack canultimately spoil the overall package.

It is true; beauty should be looked at as a combination ofphysical attributes, inner spirit, personality, intelligence, and heart. Such adefinition would greatly expand how we view the concept of true beauty.
Unfortunately, men and women often tend to look at beautyfrom opposite points of view. While many might think that men would be far morecritical than their female counterparts, the opposite is actually true. Womenare much harsher critics when it comes to analysing their peers.

But, why is so much importance placed on physical beauty? Attractiveemployees often receive more promotions and raises than their less attractivecounterparts; good-looking students do better in school because they canmanipulate their lecturers; beautiful women entice men to do their bidding;good looking men inspire women to pick up the tab. Shameful as it may seem, physical beauty plays an important part in our everyday lives.

Beauty has become an obsession among those who do notbelieve that grace, charm, or personality is enough to get them the things theywant out of life. Many individuals who cannot achieve the perfect look resortto other factors to sway people in their favour; they use money, power, orsexuality as a secret weapon to garner whatever they want from others. Whatthey do not understand is that such actions actually detract from their overallphysical beauty.

Beauty lies in what we can learn from one another. In thatrespect, everyone is beautiful.

Have a workout at work

You spend one-third of your day at work, but that doesn’tmean you have to spend that time without exercise. Knowing a few simple tipswill help you fill your days with efficient exercise breaks that not only keepyou fit but relieve stress, too.

Anyone who has tried to start a new exercise routine knowsthat half the battle is just getting you to stick with it.Try these suggestionsto keep yourself on track:

- Let your first step be two minutes of walking. Get off thebus one stop earlier.
- Use small holes in your schedule- between meetings orappointments, for example – to stretch your limbs or do simple exercises.
- Join a gym. Working out after work gives you an excuse toleave the office at a reasonable hour.
- When traveling on business, consider staying in hotelsthat have gyms.

Peopleexercise regularly when reminded to do so. Maybe you need to find the rightreminder:
§ Wear a watch with beeper.
§ Write a reminder on your desk calendar.
§ Put a note to yourself in your in-basket.
§ Ask a co-worker to remind you at a certain time.

Thinkof your exercise time as a break from your workday, not as a chore. Thefollowing 5 exercises outline a simple routine that you can do at your desk to stretchout those stiff muscles:

ü Clock Stretch: This neck stretch is excellentfor relieving the day’s tensions. Imagine you are facing the hands of a hugeclock. Turn your head to the left to look at nine o’ clock then look to theright, to three o’clock. Look up to 12 o ‘clock and then down to six o’clock. Dothe movements slowly, feeling the stretch in your neck muscles.
ü Shoulder Shrugs: Hunch your shoulders, movingthem upwards. Then rotate them forwards, down, back, and up to your ears threetimes.
ü Apple Picker:  Stretch your arms as though you were pickingapples from a tree. Stand or remain seated as you reach up with your left arm, then, with your right, stretching as far as you comfortably can.
ü Shoulder Stretch:   While standing, reach behind you, graspingyour hands behind your back. With your hands joined, lift them up as far asthey will comfortably go. You should feel a stretch in the front of theshoulders.
ü Simple massage: With your fingertips, massagethe muscles between your shoulder blade and spine. Use firm, circularmovements, paying attention to any tenderness or knots you might, feel.

When doing any of these exercises, move only as far iscomfortable for you. Stop if you feel pin of great discomfort.

Any exercise counts. The benefits of simple routines, suchas stretching or taking short walks, will add up when they are done oftenthroughout the day.

Women and a Balanced Diet

So what is this balanced diet? It is taking food from asmany different sources as possible and eating food in its natural state - thatis fresh, unprocessed and , where possible, raw. The problem is that our dietsnormally centre on our concentration on foods, which narrow down the spectrumof our diet and contain many foods that are unhealthy. Too many processedfoods, preplaced, precooked, junk food, fast food –whatever they are, theycontain too much animal fat, salt, additives and too little fibre. The foodcompanies are now coming under pressure to reduce to salt sugar and additivesin their products. This is easier to monitor with improvements in labeling.

Our methods of cooking are also hazardous to health. Fryingis a common method of preparing food, adding butter to vegetables is almost a ritual, sauces are progressively richer, and creamier. So, changing to grilling foodinstead of frying, limiting butter on vegetables and reducing sauces instead ofthickening them with butter, cream of flour would lead immediately to healthiereating. If you feel that you need the discipline of a diet programme, look atit carefully: is it too expensive? Will it fit in with your family catering? There is no point in preparing two meals and watching the others eat yourfavourite foods. Is the diet balanced nutritionally? Stay clear of diets thatconfine you to one or two foods. Nobody is meant to survive on a limited numberof foodstuffs and it could throw your metabolism awry. Do you like the foodsthat are permitted in the diet? Are there any indulgences? You know yourself. Doyou want to stretch indulgences? You know yourself. Do you want to stretch yourwillpower to the limit of adopt a more flexible attitude?  Your responses to these questions should helpyou organize a plan for reducing weight by yourself.

Women and their eating habits

There are times in a woman’s life when she needs to takecare of her diet. During adolescence, the rate of growth in a girl is secondonly to that infancy. Her growth spurt usually begins and ends earlier than inboys, but it is not possible to predict when it will happen.

The greatest influence on a teenager’s diet is her peergroup. It is more difficult to have control over an adolescent’s choice offoods the way parents can when children are younger. Eating also becomes partof a social activity and family meals assume less importance. Most teenagegirls are very concerned about their shape and weight and as many as one girlin ten may try to control her weight by some means. This usually involves excluding nutritious foods such asbread, cereal and protein and filling up on empty calories – junk food in theform of snacks and soft drinks.

In pregnancy, your body is providing nutrition for bothyou and your baby. There are foodstuffs that you may not be able to tolerate, particularly during the first four months. This is an important time for thebaby and you need to eat well when you feel like it. The best idea is to snackoften with healthy foods. That way you will not feel uncomfortable and you’llbe well fed. Your medical advisers will suggest supplements with folic acid, iron, and calcium if this is necessary. Do not take supplements unless your doctoradvises.

One of the major problems for post-menopausal women is osteoporosis, which is the loss of protein from bones. Research has shown that osteoporosiscan be halted (not cured) by having hormone therapy. This does not mean thatevery woman needs hormone therapy, but if you get aches and pains in your bonesand muscles, backache and pins and needles in your hands and feet, go to yourdoctor to ask for a diagnosis. If your bones are beginning to look thin on X-ray,your doctor should consider hormone therapy.

Women and Vegetarianism

Many women are turning to vegetarian diets; some exclude allanimal products, even dairy products, and eggs. A vegetarian diet of any kindis a healthy option but requires eating a wide variety of foods. The vitalfactor is to combine the vegetables with grains so that the complete protein ismade up. (Animal protein contains the correct number of essential amino acidsto make a complete protein; vegetable protein does not.)

Milk is a major source of vitamins and minerals so everyoneon a vegetarian diet should include skimmed milk (all the goodness with none ofthe fat) and a great variety of plant foods - nuts, lentils, pulses, and grains. If you are a vegan and therefore taking in no animal products at all, youshould supplement your diet with Vitamin B 12, which is not found in greatquantity in vegetable products. In addition, calcium, iron, and Vitamin C mightbe in short supply. One good sensible rule is that there is no such thing as anessential food- there is always an alternative.

Women are Wise and Wonderful Creatures!

Lord Byron, the famous poet said: “The great thing is tofeel we exist, even though in pain.” Very true and applicable words!

Women have the ability to be drawn to those who are notafraid to let themselves feel, because they are swept along by the tide ofenthusiasm, the zest for life, the vibrancy, and the joy. No wonder that otherwomen will want to join you, to participate in the funny, crazy, sad andbeautiful experiences of life.

Unfortunately, we can quickly get into the habit of tryingto restrain our true feelings and the sad result is that we can lose touch withour own reality – we constantly try to project a ‘safe’ image – neatly packaged, antiseptic, cool, and collected.

Go and look at children – they are so beautiful because theyare so alive, free spirited – they have not yet been conditioned in those oftencrippling adult restraints. These restraints, if exercised to the extreme, canactually close us off from life.

We as women will forever be happier with ourselves torelease the abundant life within us; and we will certainly be more attractive, beautiful, and interesting to our friends, loved ones, and partners!

Intimacy and relationships

A basic expectation of a relationship is that therelationship must provide us with closeness or intimacy.
However, what does intimacy means? It means to know mypartner very well, be able to communicate on a deeper level, feeling safe andto share secrets. It also means that we can be open with the ones we lovewithout fearing of rejection. Trust is part of intimacy – we must trust eachother; even with our lives!

Unfortunately, the need for intimacy is also a source ofconflict within the relationship as men and women have different opinions andviews of what intimacy indeed is. We all want love and intimacy but we do notsee these two things in the same light.

It is a fact that menand women are from ‘different planets’:

- Men view intimacy in a relationship in terms of power andbring this into the relationship. Money is power for them and therefore theymay show their love through loyalty and providing financially for theirpartners. To be wealthy, is a way of expressing their commitment and caring ina relationship. That is why they are not always able to communicate theirdeepest, intimate feelings to their partners.

- On the other hand, women, often need that personal touch – thoselittle intimate gestures of attention, love, and affection that make them feelspecial and close to their partners. Women are more inclined to demonstratetheir love by means of being warm and affectionate and by expressing theiremotions.

Due to these differences between men and women, inunderstanding intimacy and the different ways in showing it, we need to talk toeach other. If we do not, misunderstandings, which could lead todissatisfaction and anger, are likely to sour any relationship.

Women and Their Mental Health

Even if we are eating well, exercising, getting enough rest, and avoiding substance abuse, we still need to consider our mental healthneeds. This is one aspect of healthy living that is often ignored moremisunderstood.

We can touch our bodies and see and feel when something iswrong with them. When we know how they work, we can even imagine what is goingon inside them. However, our emotions, thoughts and beliefs - the things thatshape our mental thoughts and beliefs – are more difficult to pin down. Inaddition, because some mentally ill people are unpredictable and dangerous, we areafraid of people are mentally ill. It seems safer to shut them away and toforget about them. The last thing we want to consider is that we too might beat risk of mental illness. However, mental health and mental illness are partof everyday life.

We need the love of our parents or a stable, availablecaregiver to grow into healthy human beings. Love teaches us to trust and totry new things so that we can acquire new skills for growth. When we are loved,we can also love in return and help others grow. We need our family, friends, and the community to give us support, to tell us that we are okay. Only when wehave support can we grow into happy, healthy, productive adults.

Mental health is not possible without physical health. You needto eat well, be active, and sleep well to enjoy good mental health. You alsoneed to feel loved and worthwhile, and in control of your life. On top of allthis, most women already have problems with confidence and self-esteem   because we are not valued as much as men are.Fortunately many of us are loved and supported by our parents, our  caregivers and our families. This gives us agood start and helps us deal with difficulties.

Stress – the hidden workplace danger

Although women in different jobs face different physical andhealth dangers, stress is a major problem for most working women. Stress atwork is defined as anything that causes too much strain or pressure on aperson, and it is increasingly being linked to various health problems. Medicalresearch has shown that stress can cause changes in blood pressure, heartbeat, stomach juices and other body functions. Perhaps even more serious are theemotional and psychological problems caused by stress. These include anxiety, depression, and lack of motivation and loss of enthusiasm.

Employers have come to accept that stress cause illness, absenteeism and reduced productivity. However, not enough is done to createless stressful work environments. Stress is still often seen as work-relatedproblem.

More can still be done by employers and workers to reduceworkplace stress. Here are some ideas to implement:

·        Change the thinking that stress is a personalweakness and that the individual alone needs to be treated. Start looking atthe worker in relation to the workplace and identify how this contributes tothe stress. Identify ways of changing the workplace to minimise stress.
·        Also, develop workplace policies, which preventdiscrimination on the grounds of race, sex, age, religion, sexual orientation,or disability.
·        Make sure that the job, tools, and equipment aresuited to the worker and her skills.
·        Give individuals and groups of workers mortindependence and a greater role in decision-making.
·        Ensure that health care services at work canhelp workers cope with stress.

Remember, stress is a common threat to everybody!

Bulimia

Bulimia is similar to anorexia nervosa in that the personwith bulimia is also obsessed with dieting, being thin and has a terror offatness. The main difference is that the bulimic woman does not starve asanorexic women do, but overeats or binges. After bingeing, she will purgeherself of the food by deliberately vomiting or taking laxatives. Bulimia, likeanorexia can have serious physiological consequences. Constant vomiting mayupset the electrolyte balance of the body and cause potassium loss, which canlead to fainting and even heart attacks.

Laxative abuse can result in problems such as kidney failureand water on the lungs. It has been found that some people may be primarilyanorexic, but that they also force themselves to vomit or take laxatives whenthey do t. Similarly, some bulimics may go through periods of starvation, whichmay be followed by a binge. Therefore, the two problems are not very distinct, and sufferers may have symptoms of both.

Anorexia nervosa

Although there are different definitions of anorexia nervosa, most agree that the central characteristic is that of starvation. A person who is anorexic is obsessed with being slim, terrified of becoming fat, and preoccupied with denying themselves food. Even while starving themselves, they cannot stop thinking of food. Another common feature is massive weight loss, which is usually accompanied by amenorrhoea (this means that monthly periods stop).

It is very common for women with anorexia to have a distorted view of their bodies. The majority of those who become anorexic were never overweight to start with. They, however, see themselves as fat, regardless of how thin they become. Obsessive exercising is also common.

Anorexia nervosa is most common among young women, particularly adolescents, but it does occur among older women and men. About 10% of sufferers starve themselves to death. Those who recover from the disorder may experience ling-term side effects, such as infertility.

What causes eating disorders?

There are many theories about why women develop anorexianervosa and bulimia. Here are the main factors:

·        Family conflict;
·        Fear of growing up and becoming a sexuallymature woman;
·        The need to establish self-control;
·        Bulimic symptoms can be a way of dealing withpowerful negative feelings about oneself;
·        Major traumas can trigger anorexia or bulimia asa means of silently crying for help, especially if the trauma is disempowering;and
·        People with eating disorders tend to be highachievers who set impossible standards for themselves, and often lackassertiveness and a sense of identity.

Mostpeople who work with anorexic and bulimic women believe that their problems areextremely complex and are not simply caused by one specific factor. Eatingdisorders cannot be understood without looking closely at women’s lives as wellas the unique personal experiences of each sufferer.

What is femininity?

Femininity is created from the inside out and for a woman tobe more feminine, she must prioritize, and work on what goes on internally.

Femininity is not so much about following a set of rules, because rules are rigid and there is nothing rigid about femininity. To startwith, femininity must occur from within. A fake feminine woman will never, ever, ever fool all smart, good men. If you want a good, truly masculine man tolove you, protect you, adore you, take care of you, and worship you for life, you must have the feminine qualities to attract that kind of man.
The truth is, men want a feminine woman. The good men arealso not fooled by trashy looking, egocentric and insecure women who will givetheir bodies and feminine souls entirely, all for the sake of feeling as ifthey are enough, or worthy, for a night.

A truly feminine woman is not trapped in her head. She isfree. Women are nurturers. Truly beautiful, feminine women take care of things.

In order to be more feminine, a woman must allow herself tobe vulnerable. If you are not vulnerable, you do not need a man. It isimportant to be aware that if a man is masculine at his core, then it isimportant that he does feel needed to an extent. A woman can hold her own andmake her own money – being feminine is just more about respecting his role andallowing him to do certain things for you.

The freedom of a feminine woman is in her ability to bespontaneous and to go by feeling. This is the opposite of being indifferent. Afeminine woman is not always about what’s ‘realistic’, she’s more able to feel, and she empathizes with humans and all living things.

Tips to be feminine

Use music: Musicis one of the best ways for changing your state and influencing your mood.Listen to music that makes you feel grateful, soft, peaceful, happy, serene, joyful, and free. You can even dance to it in your own home.

Accentuate theattributes you have that are the opposite of a man’s: It’s in the way yousit, the way you talk, the words you use, how you use your hands, how yousmile, how you touch others, how you greet people (words and the physicalaspects). A lot of women stand and walk like men, drink like a man would, unknowingly. They stand with their hands on their hips the way a man would doit, and sway their arms and legs in the way that a strong and powerful manwould do.

Work-out onaccentuating and improving every feminine aspect of your body: Thisincludes the buttocks, the legs, the tummy, and the breasts (weights to helpthe breasts defy gravity. Do smaller weights with more repetitions that keepyour arms toned, rather than strong looking.

Feminine women aredelicate: Any jewellery that is overly harsh starts to take away from thewoman and draw attention to fashion.

Men go crazy over awoman who can give them a genuine smile: It does not matter what herphysical attributes are, if you give a man a genuine, happy smile and look himin the eye – he is going to be profoundly affected. Ask any man who is in touchwith his masculinity whether a smile is extremely important in a woman and hewill say yes.

Appreciate men forbeing men: Always show appreciation for a masculine man.

Tips for an office workout

Many people are trapped in an office from 9 to 5 every day. There is not even time to break for the official cup of tea or for the hotdogoutdoor during lunch. For many it also means no change for any form ofexercise. Wrong!

You can have an office workout. Here is how:

·        Change your telephone instrument with one whohas a speaker function (many cell phones also have this facility). Use thisfunction when busy with a call and use the few minutes to walk up and down inthe office.
·        Do a few push-ups every hour off the edge ofyour desk.
·        What about some static squats, in which youhover over the seat of your chair, every 20 minutes.
·        Do some leg stretches every 30 minutes to getthe blood flowing.
·        Do calf raises while standing in in the officefor a few minutes.
·        Use some heavy objects of the office, forinstance, a door stop or heavy duty stapler to do biceps curls, tricepsextensions, and shoulder raises and presses, all while sitting in your chair.
·        Take the stairs instead of the elevator, walkinstead of driving whenever possible, etc. Any bit of activity you work intoyour daily routine can only help.
·        If there is a gym at work, force yourself to gothere during the lunch hour, even if it is only for 15 minutes.

Keep your fitness goals in mind, and even if you can onlymanage a few 30-minute sessions a week, keep at it.

How alcohol affects women

Whether we like it or not, the simple factis that alcohol affects men and women differently.

According to US research, alcoholism amongwomen is on the rise across the globe. The reasons are hotly debated but it isthought that greater entry into the job market, and the stresses that itbrings, greater financial independence, and greater pressure on the home frontare all contributing factors. As well as anxiety, depression and loneliness insingle and divorced women.

How does it affect our bodies?

Women are, on average, smaller than men are;so equivalent doses of alcohol lead to greater concentration in their bodies.

Women carry more fatty tissue than men.Body fat contains little water, so women have less water with which to dilutethe alcohol.

Women have lesser amounts of the enzymethat metabolises alcohol, so more of the alcohol that women consume enters thebloodstream as pure alcohol.

When women’s oestrogen levels are high, such as when they are premenstrual, the intoxicating effects of alcohol willset in faster.

Chronic consumption of alcohol alsoincreases the risk of breast cancer.

Moderation is the key. The secret lies inmoderation rather than total abstinence (unless advised otherwise by yourdoctor); if you are a social drinker and suddenly go cold turkey, you are morelikely to start a cycle of binge drinking. For the same reason, it is also bestnot to abstain for a whole week and then take the whole week's units in onesitting.

Try one or two techniques at a time, instead of all of themat once. This will allow you to identify the most helpful techniques.

Try the technique for two to three menstrual cycles. Sometechniques may require more than one cycle to be helpful.

Stop using a technique if you have tried it for 2 or 3months and it doesn't seem to be helping. (But if it is improving other partsof your life, you might want to keep doing it even if it isn't reducing yourPMS symptoms.)
