Women and their eating habits

There are times in a woman’s life when she needs to takecare of her diet. During adolescence, the rate of growth in a girl is secondonly to that infancy. Her growth spurt usually begins and ends earlier than inboys, but it is not possible to predict when it will happen.

The greatest influence on a teenager’s diet is her peergroup. It is more difficult to have control over an adolescent’s choice offoods the way parents can when children are younger. Eating also becomes partof a social activity and family meals assume less importance. Most teenagegirls are very concerned about their shape and weight and as many as one girlin ten may try to control her weight by some means. This usually involves excluding nutritious foods such asbread, cereal and protein and filling up on empty calories – junk food in theform of snacks and soft drinks.

In pregnancy, your body is providing nutrition for bothyou and your baby. There are foodstuffs that you may not be able to tolerate, particularly during the first four months. This is an important time for thebaby and you need to eat well when you feel like it. The best idea is to snackoften with healthy foods. That way you will not feel uncomfortable and you’llbe well fed. Your medical advisers will suggest supplements with folic acid, iron, and calcium if this is necessary. Do not take supplements unless your doctoradvises.

One of the major problems for post-menopausal women is osteoporosis, which is the loss of protein from bones. Research has shown that osteoporosiscan be halted (not cured) by having hormone therapy. This does not mean thatevery woman needs hormone therapy, but if you get aches and pains in your bonesand muscles, backache and pins and needles in your hands and feet, go to yourdoctor to ask for a diagnosis. If your bones are beginning to look thin on X-ray,your doctor should consider hormone therapy.

Lose weight the easy way

Nutrition is the basis for everything related with weightloss. Eat three meals every day, forget about the sausages and French fries, limit the amount of sugar you use every day and start eating a lot ofvegetables, poultry and fruits. Also drink at least 2 litters of water everyday. And, you are allowed to snack in between – see more about snacking.

Stay away from junk or fast foods. If you eat a lot of junkand processed food, then you can forget about weight loss altogether. Thesefoods are very high in calories and will always cause weight gain. Keep a good stockof fresh fruit and vegetables.  Cookingyour own meals will really help you to stick to healthy foods. Limit yoursaturated fat and sugar intake to an absolute minimum.

Eat more frequently and in smaller portions: Eating largemeals infrequently will not serve you well when it comes to weight loss. If youwere to eat, let’s say 5 or 6 small meals each day, then your weight loss willproceed more efficiently. Each time you eat, your metabolism rises and thishelps your body with fat burning. It is total allowed to snack in between butremember to snack the right way!

Cut back on your calories but don’t deprive yourself. In thelong run, if you want to lose weight, your intake of calories must be less thanthe amount of calories you burn. Start out slow and decrease your calories by asmall amount every day.

The importance of exercising cannot be overemphasised.  Weight loss without exercise is extremelydifficult. Working out builds your muscle mass and speeds up your metabolism. When your muscle mass and metabolism are increasing, you will burn off muchmore fat. Try to increase your physical activity all throughout the day.

The key to weight loss is a change in attitude and onceaccepting it, dietary changes will not be a problem.

Eat for beauty

The term 'beauty comes from within' traditionally means that personality, kindness and compassion are just important as the way you look. If you're beautiful on the inside, you'll be beautiful on the outside too.

However, this common saying can also be taken to mean that beauty grows from what we put into our bodies, namely the food we eat.

We all know our diet contributes to our body weight but it's also intrinsically linked to our skin, hair and nails.

Without, drinking sufficient water and eating enough fruit and vegetables, we won't get the vitamins, minerals and fluids our skin needs.

No amount of face creams and serums can compensate for a poor diet.

But it's important not to go overboard with your diet. The key is a healthy, balanced diet... one that you have more than a remote chance of maintaining.

INDIGESTION AND HEARTBURN

People who suffer attacks of indigestion or heartburn often put themselves permanently on a bland diet to alleviate the discomfort they experience after meals, or because their doctor suggests it. More important than blandness in general is specific avoidance of a few substances which can cause trouble and adherence to a few rules:

·         Avoid all types of caffeine-containing beverages (tea, coffee, cola drinks)
·         Avoid smoking. Smoking increases stomach acid and is associated with peptic ulcer formation.
·         Avoid meat extracts (Bouillon cubes, concentrated tinned broths, canned gravies)
·         Don’t eat or drink acid-containing foods (pickles, tomato juice, oranges). Drink mildly alcoholic beverages (wines, beer, diluted drinks) during meals only. Avoid strong alcoholic drinks entirely.
·         Test your individual tolerance for foods known to cause indigestion and heartburn (sauerkraut, hot dogs, raw onions, beans, citrus juices, ice cream) by trying a small amount of one particular food at a time.
·         Avoid fatty, fried foods.
·         Eat potatoes – as a source of carbohydrates they tend to cause less heartburn than bread or rice.
·         Arrange for long, relaxed mealtimes (no food on the run; no arguments during dinner).
·         Eat slowly, chew thoroughly.
·         Do not eat very large meals; do not lie down until several hours after a meal
·         Do not go too long between meal
·         Do not go too long between meals.
·         Be sure that you are getting adequate nutrition.

Beauty from within and without

Outer beauty is the bloom of general health and well-being, in other words, inner beauty. To enhance your beauty, both inner and outer, you may simply need to set aside some stress-free time to relax and pamper yourself, or adapt your lifestyle in general. Whatever your particular situation, there are many natural ways to achieve beauty, from the inside out, and the outside in.

1. Diet

A diet consisting of fried and preservative laden food will take its toll on your appearance as well as your health. On the other hand, a good daily intake of fresh organically grown vegetables and fruits will boost your immune system and improve your general health.

Water is one of nature’s greatest natural cleansers, and drinking between six and eight glasses a day will improve the functioning of all your body’s systems and help clear your complexion.

2. Exercise

Any form of exercise will help you feel and look better by relieving tension and stress. Exercising also helps the body get rid of excess stress hormones and toxins. Taking a healthy amount of exercise does not necessarily mean making disruptive changes to your routine, or buying expensive equipment.  One of the most effective forms of exercise is   walking, and the only equipment you need is a comfortable pair of shoes.

3. Yoga and meditation

Relaxation and peace of mind can be enhanced greatly by yoga and meditation. Both methods calm the mind and body to promote mental and physical well-being. Meditation, whether as  part of yoga, or used separately, aims to stop troubling or stimulating thoughts  from entering the mind by focusing on the inhalation and exhalation of breath or by  concentrating on a single neutral thought.

4. Bathing

Baths are an excellent time for pampering and relaxation, and you can create different atmospheres according to your needs.

A Few drops of a carefully chosen essential oil added to the water can be used to calm and relax, lift your spirits, or rejuvenate and energize. Using herbs in bathwater can also be highly beneficial- chamomile flowers, for example, act as a gentle nerve restorative.

5. Aromatherapy massage

A potent combination of the healing powers of touch and essential oils, aromatherapy massage stimulates the circulation and promotes general health and well-being.   Not only is it deeply relaxing, it can also eliminate toxins from the body, and help resolve such problems, and headaches.
The essential oils that form the basis of aromatherapy preparations also help to maintain the elasticity of the skin.
